The Leadership Power of Staying Present

“All negativity is caused by an accumulation of psychological time and denial of the present. Unease, anxiety, tension, stress, worry—all forms of fear—are caused by too much future, and not enough presence. Guilt, regret, resentment, grievances, sadness, bitterness, and all forms of nonforgiveness are caused by too much past, and not enough presence.”

— Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now

One of the greatest leadership advantages isn’t intelligence, experience, or even confidence. It’s presence.

As leaders, we often spend far too much time living somewhere other than right here, right now.

  • We worry about tomorrow’s challenges.
  • We replay yesterday’s mistakes.
  • We imagine conversations that haven’t happened yet.
  • We relive conversations we wish had gone differently.

Meanwhile, the opportunity to lead well exists only in the present moment.

The most effective leaders I’ve coached consistently demonstrate one important habit:

  • They don’t ignore the future—they prepare for it.
  • They don’t deny the past—they learn from it.
  • But they choose to lead from the present.

When you’re fully present…

  • You listen more deeply.
  • You make better decisions.
  • You respond instead of react.
  • You notice opportunities others miss.
  • You create calm rather than spread anxiety.

As psychologist Viktor Frankl wisely observed, “Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response.”

That “space” only exists when we are truly present.

This week, catch yourself whenever your mind drifts into unnecessary worry about the future or unproductive regret about the past. Bring yourself back to the only place where you can actually create value—the present moment.

Call to Action:

Practice intentional presence every day this week. Before your next meeting, conversation, or important decision, pause for just 30 seconds. Take a breath. Clear your mind. Then ask yourself, “What does this moment require from me?” Your leadership—and the people around you—will benefit from your full attention.

Thought-Provoking Question:

How much of your leadership potential is being left untapped because your mind is living somewhere other than where your life—and your leadership—are actually happening?
